On those days when NASCAR driver Kyle Busch doesn’t feel like being loquacious, which is frequent, his answers to reporters’ questions can be curt. And tart.

Busch, 23, has even less reason to be chatty in light of his showing this year. He dominated the Sprint Cup Series’ regular season with eight wins, then watched his title hopes vanish after only two of the 10 races in the Chase for the Cup playoff.

Here, then, is Busch in his own words today at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where qualifying for Sunday’s race was rained out. Point leader Jimmie Johnson, seeking his third straight championship, will start on the pole.

Busch, on his team’s problems: ‘ ... We got work to do. We’re falling behind....’

On whether tire wear will be an issue Sunday: ‘The tires are pretty safe. I think the cars are a piece of crap.’

On whether he’s driving aggressively these days: ‘No. Just trying to stay out of the way.’

On whether he’s mentally prepared to come to the track each week: ‘Probably not. But I’ve still got a job to do and I’m here to do it.’
