Several Dodgers and Angels, including Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira, are on the list of potential Type A and B free agents.

If A and B free agents sign with a new team, their former teams will be compensated with draft picks. A team that loses a Type A free agent gets the first round pick of the signing team -- plus a ‘sandwich pick’ between the first and second rounds. Teams that lose a Type B free agent will receive a ‘sandwich.’

Ramirez and Derek Lowe are the Dodgers’ potential Type A free agents. Joe Beimel, Casey Blake, Jeff Kent, Greg Maddux and Brad Penny have Type B status.

Rafael Furcal didn’t make either list.

Teixeira is one of three potential Type A free agents for the Angels. The others are Francisco Rodriguez and Darren Oliver. Garret Anderson and Jon Garland are classified as Type B.

Player rankings are determined by Elias Sports Bureau, which divides players by league into five position groups:

1. Designated hitters, first baseman and outfielders

2. Catchers

3. Second baseman, third baseman and shortstops

4. Starting pitchers

5. Relief pitchers.

Players in the top 20% of their position group over the last two seasons are classified as Type A players. Players who rank in the top 21%-40% get a Type B designation.

The Angels caught a break: Oliver was the lowest-ranked reliever to get Type A status.

Teixeira received a higher point total than any player in baseball.
