Rigoberto Cervantes, a longtime Los Angeles radio, television and print reporter, was in a mischievous mood the other day before heading out to watch Chivas USA train for the next match in its playoff series against Real Salt Lake.

So Cervantes decided to take along a little something to get under the skin of Chivas players -- the MLS championship ring he received for being part of the Galaxy’s staff during its title-winning 2002 season.

Things didn’t quite work out.

As luck would have it, the first player Cervantes showed the ring to was goalkeeper Zach Thornton, who merely laughed.

‘I’ve got four of those,’ said Thornton, who won an MLS title and three U.S. Open Cups with the Chicago Fire.
