1. ‘We read it here first? More likely, we read it here last because others won’t report it since it won’t happen. Gillick to Seattle makes more sense. As for the Ducks, they need to worry about their owner’s fate before deciding who replaces Burke in 7 months.’

2. ‘gimmicks ain’t gonna work. Hire Lex Luther and the Joker and the judges, too. Manny is gonna whoop Oscar. Oscar should go back into his big Golden Boy corner office and make his next 500 million dollars promoting other fighters. He should retire before he goes twelve rounds too many more times. What does he have to prove? Manny is a monster.’

3. ‘The man has a politcal opinion and wants to express it. What is the problem with that? Joe Paterno can address the Republican convention and as I recall there was not a big flap about that. Pete Carroll is a citizen and he voted for Obama. He was not alone. Don’t make something out of nothing.

Let’s get the USA back on track economically, end the wars, get people fed, working and sheltered and forget about silly quibbling. And of course Beat the Bruins!’

4. ‘So, First Amendment rights don’t extend to Pete Carroll, or is it that to a Trojan head coach, or are such rights denied Trojans in general?’

5. ‘As a Republican, I have nothing but admiration for the focus, determination, and hard work that Obama and his campaign showed. He made his adjustments, raised an astonishing amount of cash through very innovative ways, and was always one step ahead of the Republicans in his political strategies. The way he went after the Red state vote, while the Republicans, until the final few weeks of the election, just played safe and defended their home turf. Jim Brown has always been the epitome of understated class. Whether you agree with him or not, he makes himself clear on everything. The man does not do anything half way. His comments about the Black community are dead on. There was a time when Blacks owned their own businesses and ran their own institutions. It was done then, it can be done now. It is all about work ethic, focus, and personal responsibility. The characteristics of successful people go way beyond race. For a determined person, race is but an obstacle which is not as big as 40 yrs. ago. Look at the times Jim Brown grew up in. The racial barriers were much worse, yet Jim managed to make it throught them, even after his athletic career ended. Jim is definitely a man’s man, one who talks the pragmatic truth from his heart without worrying about what anyone will think. He also is the rare person who practices what he preaches, a rare commodity in this day and age, a great example above the futile barrier of race.’

6. ‘Mazel Tov! I was starting to worry that Terry Murray was the second coming of prior Coach Marc Crawford in terms of sticking with an overmatched goalie just because he was named the number 1 guy. Ersberg is the so much better than LaBarbera it is not even close. Let’s go Kings, make St. Louis sing the blues tomorrow. Now the only question on Sunday morning is will the Times print the game story on page 11 or 12.’

7. ‘For many years, the NFL has disenfranchised 50% of the country or more who are unable to get satellite television because they’re living premises do not have the proper south west exposure, their landlords will not allow them to place a satellite dish on the part of their apartment that is not common area or they have the proper exposure but there are impediments in the way such as taller buildings, trees or whaever. MLB almost made the same mistake but at the last minute realized they could leverage mlb network against allowing the cable companies to carry Extra Innings and that resolved the issue and some mlb network, when it debuts in January, will have far higher penetraton than NFL Network. Nobody forced the NFL to disenfranchise millions the way it has. Jimmy Dolan who owns Cablevision in the NYC area has made it clear that until he is able to offer Sunday Ticket, he will not carry NFL Network. The issue is quite simple. NFL Network will not be available on any of these networks until 2011 when the idiotic exclusive contract with Directv expires at which time the NFL will leverage NFL Network to Sunday Ticket. Until then, the NFL is stuck in the swamp it created when it deprived over half of the country of the ability to purchase Sunday Ticket. Good for the cable networks.’

8. ‘I cannot believe that Mikan isnt more respect: 7 Championships, 6 with the Lakers. He invented drills used today for post players. He cause the creation of the Lane, and the 24 second clock. Whenever you hear Lakers Championship stats, he did 1/2 of them. I think that Kareem was a better NBA player, but Mikan was the best Laker, using the one benchmark by which teams and dynasties are measured. The same logic has Shaq in 5th place. When peers were selected, I defaulted to the best of the two or three selected, and if that was not obvious, then by All Star appearances. As a result, you will see an oldest school bias in the rest of my picks. Unfortunately, this hurts Shaq-Kobe and West-Chamberlin. For the record, my favorite player was Magic, and the best Laker (if not basketball player of all time at all levels of the sport) was Kareem, imho.

1) Mikan
2) Jabbar
3) Johnson
4) Martin
5) Shaq
6) Bryant
7) West
8) Mikkelsen
9) Worthy
10) Chamberlin

10. ‘Even though states with pro hockey teams widely supported Obama, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman should not be named secretary of commerce. However, I could see him nominated as head of FEMA. For some reason, that position seems to reward incompetence.’
