Phil Anschutz won’t be carrying cash to Newcastle

It must be the weather. All that rain and stuff.

Or perhaps it’s the accent. Virtually unintelligible to the untrained ear.

Whatever the reason, Phil Anschutz wants the world to know that he will not be buying Newcastle United of the English Premier League.

Although it took his minions a while to get back to us, they eventually did and emphatically denied reports in several English newspapers that the Denver billionaire was interested in adding an EPL team to his overflowing portfolio. Here, word for word, is what was e-mailed in this direction:

‘Neither AEG nor anyone affiliated with the organization are in negotiations or are contemplating the purchase of Newcastle United Football Club.’

So there you have it. The Magpies will have to look elsewhere for a financial savior and the English press can cross another name off their list.

It’s a pity. Seeing David Beckham in black and white sending crosses over to England teammate Michael Owen would have been something to savor.
