Oregon State can clinch its first Rose Bowl berth since the 1964 season with a win today at Arizona and a victory at home next week against Oregon.

If you believe in karma, this could be the Beavers’ year.

Chris Foster’s excellent story on Saturday about Jack Yoshihara, a member of the 1941 Oregon State team who was not allowed to play in the Rose Bowl because of his Japanese-American heritage, mentions the Beavers clinched their bid that year with a Nov. 29 win against Oregon.

What do you know? Oregon State and Oregon play next Saturday, Nov. 29.

There’s another quirky coincidence. The last time Oregon State played in the Rose Bowl, Jan. 1, 1965, the GOP nominee from Arizona, Barry Goldwater, had just failed in his run for president.

This year, the GOP nominee from Arizona, John McCain, lost in his bid for election. McCain lost to a guy named Barry ... Barack Obama.
