How badly do the Dallas Stars want to rid themselves of Sean Avery? Apparently enough to eat the remainder of his four-year, $15.5-million contract.

The Associated Press reported that Stars’ officials have cut bait on Avery. He was eligible to return from his six-game suspension for what the NHL deemed a inappropriate comment on Sunday. Instead, the Stars announced he would not return.

Even Co-General Manager Brett Hull, an Avery supporter, sounded done.

‘You have to do what’s right for both parties, and that’s what we’re really trying to do,’ Hull said.

Whether this ends Avery’s short and boorish career remains to be seen. But is there a team out there, especially in this salary-cap era, that will take a chance on this time bomb? Doubtful.

All that appears left for Avery is a Jose Canseco-style tell-all book and a shot on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ (something Avery has failed at once already).
