USC tailback Joe McKnight was helped off the Rose Bowl field at the New Year’s Day game against Penn State early in the second quarter. It was announced that the true sophomore had suffered a toe sprain and his return to the game was questionable. Before he left, he had 13 yards on 5 carries, most of which came on a 7-yard run.

McKnight missed the games against Washington State and Washington this season, also due to a sprained toe. It was not clear if the same toe was sprained today.

McKnight made 2008 All-Pac-10 honorable mention and is the recipient of USC’s Jack Oakie ‘Rise and Shine’ award, earned for the year’s longest run from scrimmage (55 yards against Notre Dame).
