Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig publicly scolded Alex Rodriguez today, three days after the Yankees star said he had used performance-enhancing drugs for three years while a member of the Texas Rangers.

Selig, in a statement, said he was ‘saddened’ by the revelation that Rodriguez had tested positive for steroids in 2003, first reported by Sports Illustrated on Saturday and confirmed by Rodriguez on Monday.

But while the commissioner went no further than the public reprimand, he did assail the players union. LAT’s Bill Shaikin reports that Selig and his lieutenants are angry about allegations in the Sports Illustrated report that Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the players union, tipped off Rodriguez to an upcoming drug test in 2004.
