So a fan gets a voice mail today from a Dodgers’ ticket sales representative, and here comes the pitch: ‘I wanted to be the first to tell you the Dodgers are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez! A little insider info!’

And then the sales rep left his name and number, and then the fan posted the voice mail on the Internet. This is now a lesson for the sales rep: In this Internet era, there is no such thing as a private e-mail or voice mail.

We called the sales rep, of course, just in case the Dodgers had sent out an internal staff memo proclaiming that a Ramirez signing would be announced soon. We’re not going to name the sales rep here, because he owned up to his words when we called. He was apologetic, and he said he was just a little too enthusiastic about what appears to be the increasingly likely possibility of a Ramirez signing.

‘It’s more like we’re anticipating and building toward that,’ he said. ‘But I’m just a low-level inside sales rep giving my opinion.’

For the record, Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said no such staff memo has been sent and he is unaware of any imminent announcement regarding Ramirez.
