It’s amazing how much commotion one 6-foot, 200-pound man can cause.

So when Manny Ramirez (finally) signed with the Dodgers, it wasn’t just water cooler talk that lit up.

Internet-savvy Angelenos took to Twitter, an online messaging service, to vent their feelings on the signing of the often-alienating slugger.

Southern California’s favorite football coach -- USC’s Pete Carroll -- weighed in with his excitement Tuesday, after some early reports of Ramirez’s return.

In Ramirez’s native Dominican Republic, the left fielder’s signing was welcome news. (Check the comments section.)

According to a search engine tracker, word of the signing sent Web searches aflutter. The results, a few days delayed, show a spike the day Ramirez rejected the Dodgers’ two-year, $45-million offer because of an issue with deferred payments. But the most recent results show that the number of searches for Ramirez will probably rise dramatically.

Maybe newly reelected Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will chime in with his pleasure after throwing his hopeful support behind a Ramirez deal a month ago.
