SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Jason Schmidt, trying to rebound from shoulder problems that sidelined him last year, was scheduled to make his Cactus League debut today when the Dodgers visited the Texas Rangers here.

Schmidt was set to start and pitch at least the first inning. ‘A lot of it depends on how hard he has to work,’ Dodgers Manager Joe Torre said before the game. ‘He could pitch two. I’m not really concerned about results. We just want to get him out there.’

The 35-year-old right-hander didn’t pitch in the majors last season and has one win in two seasons with the Dodgers.

Texas was scheduled to start Kevin Millwood, 9-10 last season, in today’s game.
