TEMPE, Ariz.--The Angels play the Cubs today--that is, a split-squad version of the Cubs.

Torii Hunter felt ‘a pinch’ in his left shoulder during a swing Thursday and will not play for ‘a couple days,’ Manager Mike Scioscia said. Hunter said he would have played if this were the regular season.

Vladimir Guerrero should make his Cactus League debut by the middle of next week, Scioscia said. The Angels have been cautious with Guerrero as he rehabilitates his surgically repaired knee, but Scioscia said he expects Guerrero will not be limited to designated hitter.

‘He should be ready to play the outfield,’ Scioscia said.

Kelvim Escobar, coming off shoulder surgery, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today and could make his Cactus League debut within 10 days, Scioscia said. That would put him on course to start the season on a minor league rehabilitation assignment and join the Angels at the start of May.

‘Right now, if you just look at the stuff, it’s the same,’ Scioscia said. ‘His shoulder is as strong as it’s been in years. We’re hoping for the same stuff and the same stamina.’

Gary Matthews Jr., coming off knee surgery, is scheduled for medical examination Saturday and could be cleared to make his Cactus League debut
