Cal State Northridge is a Cinderella team even before the NCAA tournament starts, having overcome so much adversity to reach the final 64.

John Calipari, who will coach Memphis against the Matadors on Thursday in Kansas City, said Wednesday: ‘I’ve had more people call me and say they can’t believe they lost their two leading scorers in the middle of the season and still end up where they are.

‘It doesn’t matter what the score is. With seven or eight minutes to go, you think this team is going to go away, you’re out of your mind. They’re going to play.’

But Bob Keisser of the Long Beach Press-Telegram blasts the Big West conference, arguing that it’s not really big-time basketball these days.
