Thanks to the geniuses who devise the NHL schedule, the Kings and Ducks will open the 2009-10 season at home, and on the same night.

The Kings will play host to Phoenix at Staples Center at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3, half an hour after the Ducks drop the puck on the new season at the Honda Center against San Jose.

Nice way to split the hockey audience.

Some notes: The Ducks will play six Saturday home games this season after playing only eight Saturday home games in their previous existence. They’ve traditionally played home games on Sunday nights and will have seven of those this season.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins will visit early in the season, playing at Anaheim on Nov. 3 and at Los Angeles on Nov. 5.

The Kings and Ducks will face each other six times: at Anaheim Dec. 1, at Los Angeles Jan. 14, at Los Angeles Feb. 4, at Anaheim Feb. 8, at Los Angeles April 3 and at Anaheim April 6.
