The Dodgers on Friday made official their recall of infielder Tony Abreu from triple-A Albuquerque, and the team also appears ready to place pitcher Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list.

The 24-year-old Abreu, who mostly plays second and third base, was regarded as one of the Dodgers’ top minor league prospects. He will be activated for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves, the second in a four-game series.

Abreu missed a fraction of the 2007 season and all of 2008 following hip and groin problems.

In 13 of his last 14 games, he batted .382 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.

He has not played for the Dodgers since Sept. 23, 2007.

Schmidt, 36, was scheduled to play Thursday, but Manager Joe Torre wanted to discuss his surgically repaired shoulder before making any official announcement.

[Update: 7 p.m.] Torre said in his pre-game meeting with reporters that Schmidt would, in fact, be placed on the disabled list.

‘He was disappointed,’ Torre said. ‘I just think the fact that he was able to come back after two years and (toss) the ball is something that he’s probably satisfied with.’

Torre confirmed that ‘this could be it’ for Schmidt, but left the window open for a possible return.

‘I still think once he starts feeling better he’s going to go out there and pick up a ball again.’
