Both Phoenix and Kings have had their scoring chances and each ended the first period with eight shots, but it’s been the Coyotes that have capitalized on them.

The first goal came when Coyotes right winger Radim Vrbata scored a power-play goal at 5:31 after Kings’ defenseman Drew Doughty was called for a two-minute holding penalty at 4:19. On the play beforehand, Kings goalie Jonathan Quick had stopped a tough shot from Phoenix defenseman Adrian Aucoin.

The second goal happened moments after a shot from Kings center Jarret Stoll that tipped off the post of Iilya Bryzgalov’s right. After the deflection, the Coyotes counterattacked that finished off with a Matthew Lombardi goal at 17:48.

The Kings couldn’t convert on a power play after right winger Peter Mueller was called for a holding penalty at 9:01.
