USC football: Former City player of year James Boyd rebounding from surgery

Younger players on USC’s roster will get a big opportunity to impress during practices this week because the seventh-ranked Trojans have an open date on Saturday.
Freshman tight end James Boyd, however, can only watch.
Boyd, the 2008 Los Angeles City Section player of the year at Jordan High, is still recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery that was performed before the season opener. Boyd said he was still a few weeks away getting back onto the field.
Boyd, 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, starred at quarterback and defensive end for Jordan, passing for more than 4,000 yards and 44 touchdowns and making 104 tackles, including eight sacks, during his senior season.
He also was All-City in basketball, averaging 24 points and 22 rebounds a game.
Boyd is on track to redshirt in football and he is looking forward to joining the Trojans basketball team.
“I have to go to practice and perform,” he said. “But they need a rebounder and I can do that.”
