The family of U.S. forward Charlie Davies, who was injured in a car accident earlier this week, today issued a statement thanking fans who have offered their support for the 23-year-old. Here, in part, is what it said:

‘The Davies family would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone for their thoughts, messages and prayers. The tremendous support the family has received is of great comfort and much appreciated at this difficult time. Our thoughts also go out to the families and friends of those involved in the accident.

‘We would also like to thank all the staff at Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C. and the staff at the United States Soccer federation for all their tremendous efforts.

‘Charlie is in serious but stable condition and is resting after extreme surgery. If you would like to send any messages of support to Charlie we have set up an email account at CharlieDavies9@yahoo.com.

‘Thanks you again and we will keep you informed when possible as Charlie continues his recovery.’

Thousands of fans in the RFK Stadium crowd for Wednesday night’s 2-2 World Cup qualifying tie between the U.S. and Costa Rica held up signs bearing Davies’ No. 9, along with other messages of support for the player.

Davies’ teammate and fellow forward Jozy Altidore wore a Davies jersey beneath his own during the match, with Davies’ name visible. ‘I was happy that they did it,’ Altidore said of the RFK fans’ signs. ‘It really touched a lot of us when we see the 9s up there.I’m sure it’s going to touch Charlie.’

U.S. Coach Bob Bradley visited Davies in the hospital. The forward is expected to be sidelined for six to 12 months after breaking two bones in his right leg, fracturing his left elbow, lacerating his bladder and receiving facial fractures in the accident that claimed the life of one young woman and injured another.
