The second period was scoreless, and the Flames had the only power play. They gained that advantage after Mark Giordano crunched Kings captain Dustin Brown in front of the Kings’ bench and Raitis Ivanans took exception. Ivanans was penalized for roughing at 13:56 and Giordano wasn’t penalized because the hit, though hard, was clean.

The Flames managed two shots during that advantage, including a 45-foot slap shot by Jarome Iginla that Jonathan Quick managed to keep in front of him and smother.

Ivanans, who has no points this season, nearly got his name on the scoresheet in someplace other than the list of penalties. He had two good close-in chances at 16:24 and 16:25 that were among Miikka Kiprusoff’s 12 saves.

The Kings and the Flames had 11 shots each in the second period. Calgary had a 21-19 lead in shots after two periods.
