Too many turnovers and far too many missed free throws hurt UCLA in the first half at California, the Bruins trailing 34-26 after 20 minutes at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.

The score stayed close early on, UCLA penetrating on offense and mixing the man and zone on defense to keep Cal off balance.

But the miscues began to pile up and Cal took advantage, guard Patrick Christopher showing a deft touch on jumpshots and a quick move to the basket, scoring 12 points to widen the lead.

Guards Michael Roll and Jerime Anderson -- who started on the bench as punishment for showing up late to rehab this week -- scored six points each to lead UCLA.
