Angels shortstop Erick Aybar receives cortisone injection in left knee

Angels shortstop Erick Aybar will be shut down from all baseball activities for two or three days after receiving a cortisone injection Tuesday in his left knee, which he injured against Milwaukee on June 14.

Aybar, who hasn’t played since suffering cartilage damage in the knee, was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum, team physician, on Tuesday. The Angels will probably decide by Thursday, when they can gauge the effectiveness of the shot, whether to place Aybar on the 15-day disabled list, and they appear to be leaning toward the DL.

‘We’re encouraged that, long-range, it won’t be an issue,’ Manager Mike Scioscia said before the Angels’ game against the Dodgers. ‘But short-range, we might shut him down and give him an extra week to get ready.’

Aybar still hasn’t run or taken batting practice since the injury, which he suffered when Milwaukee’s Casey McGehee slid into his knee while breaking up a double play, but he did take ground balls, throw and do agility drills at Wrigley Field over the weekend.

‘I feel good right now, and I want to play,’ Aybar said. ‘Oh, man, I’m ready to get back. I’m tired of watching everyone play.’
