The Coyotes extended their lead to 3-0 at 5:49 of the second, on a short-handed goal made possible when the Kings failed to have anyone at the left point in the Phoenix zone.

Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris blocked a shot, got the puck out of the zone quickly and started a two-on-one. Andrew Ebbett, a former Duck, shot from about 25 feet out on the right side to beat Jonathan Quick on the Coyotes’ 17th shot.

Wayne Simmonds’ first goal of the season cut that lead to 3-1. Brayden Schenn earned his first NHL point with a fine lead pass to Simmonds, who dodged two defenders to walk in alone on Phoenix goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and slice a backhander into the net at 8:20.

Coach Terry Murray mixed up his third and fourth lines, putting Simmonds with Schenn and Brad Richardson and putting Kevin Westgarth on the right side with Alexei Ponikarovsky and Michal Handzus.

Late in the period, Kings captain Dustin Brown was hit into the boards in front of the penalty box by Lauri Korpikoski and skated back to the bench hunched over, cradling his arm. He didn’t return but there was little time left in the period so he might not have been injured, merely out of breath. We’ll look for him in the third period and provide an update.
