First inning

The Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants were scoreless after the first inning despite getting runners on base in World Series Game 4 on Sunday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

With San Francisco’s 21-year-old Madison Bumgarner on the mound, Elvis Andrus walked on four pitches. After Andrus was forced at second base on Michael Young’s grounder, Josh Hamilton grounded into a double play.

The Giants’ Andres Torres opened the game with an infield single against the Rangers’ beefy right-handed pitcher Tommy Hunter, then he stole second base before Freddy Sanchez grounded out.

Aubrey Huff, San Francisco’s designated hitter, also grounded out with Torres taking third base. But Torres was stranded when Buster Posey grounded out as well.

Second inning

A diving catch by the Texas Rangers’ Josh Hamilton saved a run and the Rangers and San Francisco Giants remained scoreless after two innings Sunday in World Series Game 4.

With Cody Ross on first base and one out at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Travis Ishikawa grounded into what appeared to be a double play. But Ishikawa was called safe at first base, drawing a brief argument from Texas Manager Ron Washington.

Ishikawa then took third base on Edgar Renteria’s single. Nate Schierholtz followed by hitting a shallow fly to center field and Hamilton made a diving catch to end the threat.

In the bottom of the inning, the Rangers’ Ian Kinsler drew a two-out walk from San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner. Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez then snagged a high line drive hit by Jeff Francoeur.

Third inning

Aubrey Huff’s two-run home run gave the San Francisco Giants a 2-0 lead over the Texas Rangers in the third inning of World Series Game 4 on Sunday night.

After Andres Torres doubled down the right-field line against Texas starter Tommy Hunter, Huff -- the Giants’ designated hitter in this game -- slammed his homer deep into the right-field corner at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner retired the side in the bottom of the inning, as Bengie Molina grounded out, Mitch Moreland struck out and Elvis Andrus grounded out.

The Giants are trying to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven-game series to win their first world championship since 1954, when they played in New York.

Fourth inning

The Texas Rangers finally got their first hit off 21-year-old Giants starter Madison Bumgarner in the fourth inning, but San Francisco still led, 2-0, in World Series Game 4.

Michael Young hit a grounder to the right side that Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez snagged deep in the hole, but his throw to first base was too late and it went for a single.

Josh Hamilton then hit a ball that bounced off Bumgarner and was fielded by Sanchez, who tagged Young as he ran to second for the first out.

Vladimir Guerrero, one of the rare major leaguers who doesn’t wear batting gloves, then struck out and Hamilton was thrown out trying to steal second base.

In the top of the inning, the Giants went quietly except for a two-out single by Edgar Renteria. Nate Schierholtz then flied out to end the inning.

Fifth inning

The Texas Rangers went quietly in the fifth inning as the San Francisco Giants maintained a 2-0 lead over the Rangers in World Series Game 4.

With Giants starter Madison Bumgarner sailing along, Nelson Cruz popped out, Cody Ross made a shoestring catch of Ian Kinsler’s liner to left field and Jeff Francoeur grounded out.

Texas starter Tommy Hunter lasted only four innings as reliever Alexi Ogando took over in the top of the fifth, and he also retired the side. Andres Torres and Freddy Sanchez both flied out and Aubrey Huff struck out.

Sixth inning

The Texas Rangers managed only their second hit off Madison Bumgarner as the San Francisco Giants continued to maintain their 2-0 lead over the Rangers after six innings at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland hit a one-out single to right field off the 21-year-old Giants starter. But Elvis Andrus then grounded into a double play.

Texas, meanwhile, was getting solid work from reliever Alexi Ogando when suddenly the right-hander had to leave the game.

Working his second inning after taking over for starter Tommy Hunter, Ogando had two outs and a 1-1 count on Juan Uribe when the pitcher apparently strained an oblique muscle and could not continue.

Former Angels pitcher Darren Oliver then took over on the mound for the Rangers and got Uribe to pop out.

Seventh inning

The Texas Rangers managed only their second hit off Madison Bumgarner as the San Francisco Giants continued to maintain their 2-0 lead over the Rangers after six innings at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland hit a one-out single to right field off the 21-year-old Giants starter. But Elvis Andrus then grounded into a double play.

Texas, meanwhile, was getting solid work from reliever Alexi Ogando when suddenly the right-hander had to leave the game.

Eighth inning

Buster Posey’s first home run of the postseason widened the San Francisco Giants’ lead to 4-0 over the Texas Rangers after eight innings at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The Rangers would face a 3-1 deficit to the Giants in the best-of-seven-game series if they can’t rally.

With Texas reliever Darren O’Day pitching, Posey hit a deep fly to center field that seemed to surprise Rangers center fielder Josh Hamilton as it kept carrying over his head and out of the stadium.

Texas batters continued to struggle against Giants starter Madison Bumgarner. Jeff Francoeur hit a long fly that San Francisco left fielder Cody Ross caught at the base of the wall, while Bengie Molina flied out and Mitch Moreland took a called third strike.

Bumgarner has given up only three hits through eight innings.

Ninth inning

The San Francisco Giants are one win away from claiming their first championship in more than 50 years after Madison Bumgarner threw a gem to beat the Texas Rangers, 4-0, in World Series Game 4 on Sunday.

Giants closer Brian Wilson preserved the shutout by retiring Elvis Andrus, Michael Young and Josh Hamilton in the ninth inning.

The 21-year-old Bumgarner gave up only three hits through eight innings, while Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey led the Giants’ offense with home runs.

Game 5 is Monday and, if necessary, Game 6 would be Wednesday at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Giants last won the World Series in 1954, before they relocated from New York to San Francisco.
