There is absolutely no doubt now the UConn women are riding the rail to NCAA Division I basketball history. The Huskies beat No. 2 Baylor by one point Tuesday night in Hartford — which is all you really need to do — to cross a critical bridge in their pursuit of Coach Wooden and UCLA’s 88-game streak. UConn has won 80 in a row, and this one included a comeback from eight down with 6:51 to go. That will only help as games continue.

On Dec. 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Huskies will beat Ohio State to tie the record. On Dec. 21 at the XL Center in Hartford, the Huskies will beat Florida State to set the record. On Dec. 28 in Stockton, Calif., UConn will beat Pacific for win No. 90.

But then comes Stanford in Palo Alto on Dec. 30. Can’t win them all, right? Oh, wait, UConn does.

Each of Connecticut’s 80-straight triumphs has usually been delivered with complete domination, tossing an opponent out of the gym like a lion spitting out a gazelle bone.

The Huskies list of accomplishments the last several seasons is otherworldly. Their elite status won’t change -– even with an eventual loss this season.

The Huskies may have faced the best player they’ll see in 6-foot-8 star Brittney Griner on Tuesday night, when Connecticut squeaked by Baylor, 65-64. But the Huskies haven’t yet seen the best team.

After steamrolling through season after season, the No. 1 Huskies will finally hit a roadblock when they meet No. 7 Ohio State on Dec. 19 in Madison Square Garden. The Buckeyes return all five starters, including senior center Jantel Lavender, from last season’s 31-5 team and boast seasoned veterans and a deep bench.

Ohio State will end Connecticut’s streak at 87 wins, just one shy of UCLA men’s team record.

Connecticut’s road to history and another perfect season has more potholes than the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Huskies’ remaining schedule includes 11 games against teams among this week’s top 25, including No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Duke and No. 7 Ohio State.

But after erasing a late eight-point deficit against No. 2 Baylor on Tuesday — thank freshman Bria Hartley’s two cold-blooded three-pointers — UConn appears destined to break UCLA’s record on Dec. 21 against No. 16 Florida State.

The streak will reach 100 against Duke, 117 when the Huskies celebrate their third consecutive national championship, far shy of UCLA’s seven straight under the late John Wooden. When does UConn lose? Sometime after senior All-American Maya Moore graduates and Coach Geno Auriemma takes over the Lakers from Phil Jackson.

UCLA is going down. The Bruins’ NCAA-record 88-game winning streak under John Wooden will fall late next month when the Connecticut women thump Florida State in Hartford, Conn., for what will be their 89th consecutive victory.

Baylor had its chance. Poised to end the streak Tuesday night, the second-ranked Bears were ready to turn the Huskies to mush but just couldn’t close it out. And so the last real threat to Connecticut’s history-making run was averted.

The Huskies won’t stop at 89, of course. With another star-laden recruiting class set to arrive in Storrs next season that includes two-time Parade All-American Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Connecticut is going to take this streak well into triple digits.]
