Ducks update: Teemu Selanne talks about the future in Anaheim

Teemu Selanne, at 41, is leading the Ducks in scoring. His name appears every morning among the list of NHL scoring leaders.

There are other numbers he has a difficult time facing.

“I’m a little scared to look at those [league] standings,’ Selanne said on Tuesday after practice in Anaheim.

The Ducks have 10 wins in 37 games and they are coming close to the moment where they become sellers, not buyers, on the NHL market. Selanne, obviously, remains a valuable commodity for a Stanley Cup contender.

He spoke to the Orange County Register on Monday about remaining positive and not thinking about playing elsewhere. Selanne stayed on message on Tuesday.

‘This is too early to think about that [leaving],’ he said. ‘The focus is right here. Let’s see what happens with right now. It’s time to have fun here.’

So, does his family have veto power over a move? Selanne laughed and said they did not.

‘The family has always been supportive,’ he said. ‘They know what’s going on and they’ve always stood behind my decisions. That’s the easiest part.’

No matter what happens, Selanne has managed to remain relentlessly positive. The Ducks have at times taken one step forward and then failed to build on it.

“That’s the most frustrating. We haven’t had any rolls yet,’ Selanne said. ‘That’s the hardest part, win one, lose two. … There’s still high hopes

‘The only way to turn this around is to stay positive and believe. … If we would play well as a team and we still can’t find a way to win the games, what are you going to do? Nothing.

‘I don’t feel like we have played one time, like one week, where we have played well as a team. Everybody. And you know what, if we can do that, we are gonna have success here.’
