BlackBerry outages spread to U.S. from abroad

Some BlackBerry users in the U.S. were experiencing ‘intermittent service delays’ Wednesday as problems that started abroad spread to North America.

Research In Motion Ltd, the maker of the devices, said it was working to resolve the problems. The company said Tuesday that a ‘core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure’ had failed, causing delays in delivering messages and in Web browsing that affected customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.


The switch failure had triggered a large data backlog, RIM said, and it was unclear Wednesday if that had led to the problems in the U.S. and Canada.

The service disruptions come as RIM stock has been hammered in recent weeks because of poor financial performance. The stock was down about 1.5% in early trading Wednesday.
