Maurice Donald Davis, 24, a black man, was shot about 11:50 a.m. Friday, April 6 at 246 E. 101st Street in Watts. He died shortly after in a hospital, at 1:23 p.m.

Davis was walking to his car when a person on foot shot at him numerous times, then ran northbound on San Pedro Street. On Saturday morning, there was no shrine on the spot where he died, a side street in one of the historically highest-homicide areas in the city. A neighbor queried by a reporter said: ‘You ain’t gonna get anyone around here to tell you anything. That’s suicide. You get to leave here, I don’t.’

* Update: This case has been categorized as ‘cleared other’ by LAPD Southeast detectives. There is a suspect, but prosecutors declined to filed charges against him because there was some evidence indicating he may have acted in self-defense.
