Alfredo Avila, a 20-year-old young Latino man, was shot and killed in the 200 block of Avenue 59 at about 10:30 p.m. in Highland Park on Sunday, March 9. Avila was standing outside of an apartment complex when a suspect or suspects fired several shots, said Det. Pjai Morris of LAPD’s Northeast Division. Avila was hit as he attempted to run from the shooters. Northeast police officers patrolling the area heard the shots and responded to the location. The officers were flagged down by neighbors in the area and were told that a shooting had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers discovered Avila with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. by paramedics.
