Preston Wayne Brumfield, a 49-year-old black man, was found unconscious in a pool of blood on the sidewalk at 1948 20th Street in Santa Monica at about 11:30 p.m. on May 11 and was pronounced dead at a local hospital four days later, at 11:18 a.m. May 16. Coroner’s investigators said initially that his injuries were consistent with an assault, and that he may have been hit with a baseball bat, but further investigation is pending to determine the cause of death. A passerby made the 911 call. Brumfield lived a few doors down from where he was found.--Jill Leovy
