Ly Tran, a 45-year-old Asian man, was shot in the head on Friday, May 15, in the 13100 block of Lakewood Boulevard in Downey, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Tran was shot at his place of business by an unknown person who argued with him, coroner’s investigators said.

Tran had recently extended the hours at Downey Drinking Water to try to increase business, family members told The Downey Patriot. He was shot about 7:45 p.m., 45 minutes after he would have previously closed up for the night.

Surveillance video at the scene captured a brief scuffle between Tran and a male Hispanic, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a medium build and a medium complexion, according to the newspaper. Downey police said the man wore a distinctive cap with the letters “SF” on the front.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Aubuchon at (562) 904-2361 or Det. Hernandez at (562) 904-2368.
