Opinion: Voices and flags raised on the Mall

WASHINGTON -- They drove 12 hours from Toronto on Monday night, picking up one more in Ithaca, N.Y., along the way. They stayed with friends, one of them sleeping on the floor, and this morning headed to the Mall.

And now they are bundled up on the Mall in front of a Jumbotron.

“We came all the way here to watch him on TV,” said Julia Cohen, 30, a dual Canadian and American citizen who is here with her sister and a friend. “But it’s different.”

And as she said that, the sea of people cheered and raised little U.S. flags.

“See? Just to be part of the crowd,” she said. Then, she and her friends pulled out their flags as well.
