President Obama’s second Southern California town hall is scheduled to start today at 1 p.m. at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex downtown. So far, we haven’t heard who all’s going to be there, but we do know that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, are expected to be on hand.
Schwarzenegger, recall, has supported the president’s stimulus package -- one of the few Republican governors to have done so. And of course, his wife made that famous last-minute endorsement of Obama on the eve of the California primary when her cousin Caroline Kennedy came to town and they appeared at an Obama rally at UCLA with Oprah Winfrey.
We are so happy to be able to now share one of our favorite moments on the campaign trail. We were there on Halloween, in Columbus, Ohio, when Schwarzenegger joined Sen. John McCain onstage and dissed the physical prowess of then-candidate Obama BIG TIME. Schwarzenegger has a deep connection to Columbus, which hosts the annual Arnold Classic bodybuilding competition. He told the crowd:
‘The Arnold’s Classic is all about building up the bodies and pumping up, and that’s why the next Arnold’s Class, I want to invite Sen. Obama, because he needs to do something about those skinny legs. We’re gonna make him do some squats, and then we’re gonna go and give him some biceps curls to beef up those scrawny little arms. But if he could only do something about putting some meat on his ideas....’
Here’s the video; the slam on Obama comes right at the beginning:
About 10:30 this morning, the president is expected to tour Southern California Edison’s Electric Vehicle Technical Center in Pomona, and then he will head across the street to Village Academy High School. He will meet with some advanced placement English students, who made a video called ‘Is Anybody Listening?’ that the president mentioned last week in his education speech.
In the video, the kids talk about how scared they are about the crumbling economy and its effects on their parents and families. It’s heartbreaking. Their teacher talks about how they were inspired by ‘The Great Gatsby’ and its take on the American Dream. You can see it here:
We’ll be live blogging Obama’s town hall, starting around 12:15 p.m. Stay tuned....
