Don’t blame the officials

The only disappointment for Birmingham in its 20-6 loss to Crespi should be the way coaches and players were blaming the officials. Birmingham was assessed 14 penalties for 135 yards and players truly lost their composure in the fourth quarter after a series of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. City teams seem to think they are always at a disadvantage with the officials when they face Southern Section teams, but it looked like to me Birmingham was guilty for all the offsides, late hits and silly disciplinary breakdowns.

The officials didn’t lose the game. Allowing three big plays -- a 97-yard kickoff return, a 98-yard fumble return and a 55-yard TD run -- cost Birmingham. Otherwise, I think Patriot fans should be encouraged. New QB Morey Croson did better than I expected. Forget his three interceptions. He got the ball to De’Von Flournoy, showed poise and potential. The defense made some great hits. I thought before the game that Venice deserved to be the City title favorite. Now I think Birmingham is right there because the Patriots are going to get a lot better and perhaps learn from their mistakes. As for Crespi, the Celts better hope injured QB Kevin Prince (knee) can return. Without him, big problems loom. With Prince, Crespi can beat anybody.
