If Coach John Hazelton wants Carpinteria to get back to its 2002 CIF championship-winning self, he’s going to need a secret weapon to beat the Oaks Christians and Oak Parks of the world. He may have found it in sophomore QB R.J. Roseborough.

“This guy shoots rockets and he definitely has a bright future ahead of him,” Hazelton said. “Even better, we didn’t have to go looking for him –- he pretty much lives across the street [from the high school].”

The 6-foot-3 Roseborough is a nephew of former NFL QB Randall Cunningham and is poised to share QB duties with all-around offensive standout Freddy Maldonado. If all goes well, Roseborough will see the majority of the snaps this season. And he’ll definitely be under center for the first snap of the season against Morro Bay on Friday.

“It’s amazing how far R.J. has come in the last year,” said Hazelton, who gave a positive report of Roseborough’s performance in a scrimmage Friday against Dos Pueblos. “We’ve never had a quarterback over 5-10 and we’ve had few players work so hard to get to this level.

“The sky’s the limit for this guy, and we’re lucky to have him.”

We’ll see over the next few weeks if this is just over-optimistic, preseason chatter or the first glimpse of somebody special.
