Long Beach Poly, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, has to wonder ‘what the heck?’ after the first quarter against host Birmingham.

Birmingham, which lost its season-opener last week but is ranked No. 18 by The Times, jumped to a 6-0 lead with 4:25 to play in the opening quarter as junior De’von Flournoy caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Goforth.

Ater recovering a Poly fumble on the Jackrabbits’ ensuing possession, the Patriots extended their lead when standout Milton Knox scored on a one-yard run with 1:04 left in the quarter.

On the bright side for Poly: The Jackrabbits (1-0) blocked a point-after kick after the first touchdown and stopped a two-point conversion run after the second. So, things could have been worse.
