‘We wanted to show the United States that we are the No. 1 team in America,’ said Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley after the Monarchs’ 58-6 win over West Covina.

You gotta love Barkley’s energy and spirit, but are the Mater Dei players maybe getting a little ahead of themselves (or full of themselves) by thinking about a mythical national championship? After one week?

Probably not. The Monarchs are, after all, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 9 in the nation, play in one of the toughest leagues in the nation (no question about that) and one of the best divisions also (the Pac-5). So if Mater Dei can make it through its season undefeated, should they end up No. 1 in the national polls

Obviously we know what Barkley thinks, but what do you think?
