Holbrook “runs it off”

When it comes to athletic remedies, there’s one treatment method every coach uses. I know this personally because I remember my youth soccer coach telling me to just “run it off” every time I took a ball to the gut or a tumble on the field (obviously, I wasn’t very good at soccer).

But this old coaching adage apparently worked for Hart QB B.R. Holbrook on Friday night. After struggling early in the game, Holbrook got “the butterflies” out of his stomach in the second quarter when he scrambled for 14- and 15-yard gains on consecutive carries. From that point on, he looked great, finishing with 149 yards passing, two touchdowns and 77 yards on the ground as Hart defeated Moorpark, 28-14. Not bad for a first start.

“I definitely was nervous coming into this one,” Holbrook said, “but I definitely started to relax after those two runs.”

I knew Hart had a lot of high hopes for Holbrook this season, but I was skeptical as to what he could do for the Indians early on. In the first quarter, I saw what I was kind of expecting – a kid just getting used to a new position. But my doubtful demeanor jumped out the window in the second quarter when Holbrook finally showed he can be just as vital to the Hart offense as that guy Delano Howell is.

And I’m not the only guy raving about Holbrook. Hart Coach Mike Herrington was just as pleased.

“We thought his debut was awesome,” Herrington said. “It’s a big task coming in like he did. If you’re not nervous, then something’s wrong with you.”

Fortunately for Hart nothing is wrong. I see them as a definite contender for the Northern Division title.

Oh, one more thing: I want to give a shout-out to Grant Marek for his statistical assistance tonight. Thanks, man.
