One guy who was disappointed by Nick Crissman’s absence from the Edison lineup was Brad Curtis, the quarterback at San Clemente.

‘The hype of it was that there were two of the best quarterbacks in Orange County,’ said Curtis, who finished 11 of 19 for 170 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. ‘He’s got the UCLA scholarship. You want to showcase yourself against the best competition.’

San Clemente could never really establish a running game or consistency on offense, especially in the second half.

‘When you have a break, like Crissman being out, you have to cash in,’ said San Clemente Coach Eric Patton.

San Clemente had a lot to gain with a victory. It has been stuck in second-tier limbo for several years. This was an opportunity for the Tritons, perpetual runners-up to Mission Viejo in the South Coast League, to beat a so-called elite opponent. But once again, they came up short.

‘It’s discouraging,’ Patton said. ‘We’re not a team that’€™s physical enough to play with Edison and some of the DI teams.

‘They wore us out.’
