This is why I like high school sports

My apologies for checking in so late in the day after such a busy Friday night in the Inland Empire.

I just returned from taking my two youngest sons, ages 5 and 7, to an autograph signing with Angel players Jered Weaver, Howie Kendrick and Reggie Willits at Linder’s Furniture store in Costa Mesa.

I got their 45 minutes before it started, but I guess we weren’t early enough because the 90-minute session ended before we got near the front. One of the marketing genuises then handed out game tickets to those who didn’t get autographs, but he ran out when he was about 10 people in front of us. He came back and gave us Angel caps instead . . . sigh. I coached my son’s Little League team last fall and we were the Angels . . . we have hats everywhere.

All my kids really wanted to do was say hello to the players and throw a couple questions their way (like, ‘Jered, when are you going to get rid of that 90s haircut?’), but they were outnumbered by middle-age men who wanted to impress his friends at their next poker party, or hawk their autographed memorabilia on Ebay.

I won’t make that mistake again.
