Some Orange County things that jumped out at me in Week 1:

  • Rap Dantic rushed for 345 yards as Magnolia doubled its win total from last season with a 41-28 victory over Katella. He has 467 yards in two games.
  • Ray Holley of El Modena scored a school-record six touchdowns in a 47-12 victory over Orange. What are they feeding the running backs in North Orange County?
  • Capistrano Valley Christian scored 92 points against Liberty Christian in its 92-6 victory. Seriously, 92 points? Actually, I’ll reserve judgment on this until I talk to someone who was there; the Eagles scored only 27 points in the second half. According to the Southern Section Record Book, Fullerton scored 109 against Anaheim in 1921.
  • Junior Matt Barkley passed for 303 yards and four touchdowns, both career highs, and Bruce Rollinson declared Mater Dei is going to ride his arm after a 58-6 victory over West Covina. That’s what I like to hear: You’ve got The Man, use The Man.
  • Northwood is off to an 0-2 start, and has been outscored 59-6. University snapped a six-game losing streak to Northwood with its 30-6 victory on Friday. I’m sure I never thought Northwood would ever start -0-2 , at least until it started playing Division I (ie. Pac-5) opponents.
  • Anaheim opened with a 28-0 victory over Sunny Hills. OK, it’s not a win over Mater Dei, but the Colonists were one of the feel-good stories of last season, and it’s nice to know that this year might validate last year’s run to the Southern Division finals. A loss certainly would have had everyone uttering ‘fluke.’
