Coach Tom Salter is confident that Culver City will have a good, competitive team this season, but preached caution when considering the Centaurs for the The Times’ top 25 just yet.

Culver City (1-0) escaped with a 17-14 victory over improving St. Bernard (0-1) in its opener, but the margin should have been wider.

Senior quarterback Darius Banks showed he can beat opponents on the run and at the pass by rushing for 89 yards in 13 carries and completing 14 of 24 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown, but the Centaurs failed to capitalize on several opportunities inside the 20-yard line.

‘We did fine for the first week, but we’ve jut going to do better in the red zone,’ Salter said.

Culver City plays host to Point Loma (1-1) of the San Diego Section in an intersectional game on Friday night.
