Got milk?

For Mayfair and Lakewood, the milk bucket is back up for grabs on Friday at Bellflower High.

Huh?

For those uninitiated to the Milk Bucket Game -- that, previously, would have included me -- here’s a brief explanation.

The old metal bucket, mounted on a wooden frame, is the perennial trophy that goes to the winner of the annual game between the teams. Lakewood leads the series, 8-6, since 1993, when the game was reinstated after not being played since the 1960s.

‘We think it has spent a little too much time over there,’ Mayfair Coach Woodie Grayson said.

Mayfair, though, owns the bucket for at least three more days.

The Monsoons won last year’s meeting, 42-41, while Lakewood won, 31-28, in 2005. Both games went to double overtime.

‘It’s turned into a really, really big deal for this city,’ Grayson said. ‘We love it. We coaches stand on the sidelines and just look at each other and go, ‘This is what it’s all about.’ And, hopefully, the kids pick up on that and feel the same way.’
