Snack time in Torrance

In the interests of full disclosure, let me first say that I almost never sample snack-bar food.

As someone who constantly fights the battle of the bulge and has tried -- and been turned away twice in three years -- in attempts to gain insurance approval for gastric-bypass surgery, I tend toward brought-from-home pretzel sticks in a little plastic baggie, washed down with bottled water, and both are usually gone by the time I get done sitting in traffic en route to games.

But the pretzels, with a few Cheetos puffs thrown in for variety, and half of a 20-ounce bottle of Diet Coke just didn’t do the trick tonight. So, mindful of a directive to check out the snack bars, keep my eyes and ears open for interesting tidbits and sound bites, while maybe reviewing the food while I was at it, I decided to do just that.

And the special of the night at Zamperini Field in Torrance, where Torrance is playing host to West Torrance, did the job, satisfying my hunger and my taste buds. Just as the hostess/booster mom at the head of my food line said it would.

‘Our hamburgers are pretty good, but really, I’d go with these,’ Vicki Higginbotham said, pointing to the colored-paper sign announcing the $3 dinner of two carne asada tacos.

After doing as she suggested, I’d like to recommend them to anyone else, especially for that modest price. The meat was tender, the cheese and tortillas fresh and the salsa perfect -- not too mild, yet not too hot.

So, Mrs. Higginbotham, you were right. Good suggestion.

‘You’ve gotta do your job,’ she said with a smile. ‘You’ve got to sacrifice.’
