San Clemente sets the standard

One week after frittering away a 10-point lead and losing to No. 12 Edison, 26-17, a loss that dropped then-No. 24 San Clemente out of The Times’ top 25, the Tritons came back with a solid victory Friday -- over another top 25 team.

San Clemente defeated No. 24 Upland, 39-20, as the Tritons scored the last 25 points of the second half behind the play of quarterback Brad Curtis.

It was the kind of performance that can only be considered redemptive.

The Tritons might not be among the elite teams in the Southland, but they are the divining rod of the Top 25, a watermark team that you need to be at least as good as in order to be among the 25 best teams around.
