Temescal Canyon can extend its winning streak against visiting Corona Santiago to five with a victory Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Titans (3-0) are ranked No. 5 in the Southern Section Inland Division coaches’ poll, Santiago (2-1) is No. 10.
Temescal Canyon has posted back-to-back shutouts over Riverside Arlington and Elsinore, but Coach Mike Sands had a tough time singling out any individuals.
‘We’ve got every kid doing his assignment,’ he said. ‘That’s what we preach, ‘Do your job first and then proceed to the ball.’ ‘
On offense, quarterback Jonathan Warzeka continues to spearhead the option attack. He has attempted only 12 passes in three games, but has rushed for 308 yards in 51 carries and has scored a team-high eight touchdowns.
Sands said Warzeka got stronger in the off-season and lowered his speed in the 40-yard dash to a ‘legitimate’ 4.5 seconds.
‘He’s the leader on offense and makes things happen,’ Sands said.
I wonder if the Sharks plan to use UCLA-bound defensive back Anthony Dye as a ‘quarterback spy’ to keep track of Warzeka’s movements. That could be their only hope of ending the losing streak.
