It was late in the fourth quarter of the Wilson-Fairfax game Friday, and Wilson was clinging to a 21-20 lead, but Fairfax was camped out on the Mule’s 47-yard line with less than three minutes to play.

Lions quarterback Alan Ferguson, in shotgun formation, caught the snap from center and quickly locked in on his wide receiver, who was sprinting down the left sideline. But Ferguson didn’t see the Wilson defender who had locked in on him. He was hit as he threw his pass and the ball, losing all of its momentum, floated into the arms of Anthony Denham. The gangly 6-5 Wilson defensive back returned the interception to the Fairfax 18.

Wilson running back Jorge Monroy eventually scored from 12 yards and that touchdown proved the difference in a 28-26 victory.

After the game, Wilson Coach Eddie Martinez was asked who made the impact play that positioned the Mules (1-2) for their first win of the season.

He did not hesitate with his answer: ‘I don’t know. I have to wait until I see the film.’
