When Dave Demarest retired a few months ago from Westminster La Quinta, he left behind a legacy that included more wins than any other baseball coach in Orange County history.

It turns out that Demarest wasn’t done.

Cypress College announced Tuesday that Demarest has joined the Chargers’ coaching staff, where he will be an assistant to Scott Pickler. Demarest’s vast experience won’t be needed to turn around a program -- last season, Cypress (31-22) was the state runner-up to Riverside Community College.

Demarest coached La Quinta for 34 seasons and had a 753-213 record (.780), won three Southern Section championships, 22 league titles and 42 assorted coach of the year awards. Upon his retirement in the spring, he was inducted into the California Coaches Assn. Hall of Fame.

And deservedly so.
