A few days after the Redondo football team got on the winning track by beating North Torrance, 28-13, following losses in its first two games, the school’s normally rock-solid girls’ volleyball team looked to regain its winning form Tuesday in a nonleague match at South Torrance.

The Sea Hawks (5-2), ranked No. 11 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com, began the season with five consecutive victories and won the Gahr tournament for the second year in a row in the process.

But they have since dropped two in a row, both in five games, to Los Angeles Marymount on Sept. 18, and to Santa Barbara on Saturday.

I asked Coach Tommy Chaffins the last time that has happened to the Sea Hawks. He didn’t know, and I doubt it has happened in his tenure, at least not outside the confines of a top-notch tournament.

‘We haven’t had very many back-to-back losses,’ said Chaffins, in his seventh year as coach. ‘I don’t know when’s the last time we lost two in a row. We’re hungry for a win right now.’

With Robert Kutsch, a veteran coach and the school’s athletic director at the helm, South Torrance is undoubtedly aware of that.

The Spartans advanced to the Southern Section Division II-AA quarterfinals last season, and are usually no slouches themselves. Should be a good match.
