Something’s gotta give. Right?

Well, go see.

Much of the population in Torrance is likely to be at the south end of the city tonight, watching West Torrance and South Torrance either play for bragging rights, or else, just get together and meet in the middle, figuratively speaking.

Both teams will come to the 7 p.m. nonleague game at South Torrance High with 3-0 records and intent on keeping those marks unblemished, but last year, they tied, 14-14.

And while West won in 2005, South came out on top in each of the two years before that, so it’s anybody’s guess as to what direction this latest meeting will take.

‘I think it’s good for the city,’ said South Torrance Coach Josh Waybright, who played for the Spartans before graduating from the school in 1993. ‘Obviously, it’s a big game that both teams would like to win, and it’s always tough. It should be a pretty good game.’

West Torrance boasts last year’s top rusher in the city, senior Brian Baucham, a shifty, elusive threat for a breakaway anytime he touches the ball. He has helped the Warriors to victories over El Segundo, Torrance and Hawthorne in which they have averaged 42.6 points, and haven’t given up any, to anybody.

South Torrance, which averages 37.6 points while allowing 14.3 a game and has beaten Hawthorne, Bishop Montgomery and Warren, counters with junior running back John White. White has 65 carries for 363 yards, which averages to 5.6 yards a carry and 121 yards a game. He is coming off his best game of the season, having rushed for 160 yards in 27 carries in a 23-14 victory over Warren last week.

White has scored six rushing touchdowns and also had two receptions for 39 yards and one score.

This matchup, of teams, and individuals, has all the earmarks of a classic case of one-upsmanship.

Should be fun.
